With the start of another season of great heart stopping events, I do want to drive home an offer that has been stated before. Jabo we all appreciate, the selfless work you pour into these events. If there is anything you need help with; testing, trying to break, trying to fix, or checking your sanity... Please let the community know. We are more than willing to assist the Donkey |

Yeah Jabo, if there's something I can do during the week for practice to help you out in the arena, let me know. Run practice AI's, enableflight, arena testing, whatever...
Here to help....

It was 3 standard cloud layers forced with .sdot commands, and a .weather 3 thrown in for some extra clouds.

Nice drop on that CV. They zigzag when attacked.
I freehanded the cloud settings, I wanted something not too hard, but looking "tropical". TY for the pics, glad you enjoyed it.

My pleasure Hawk.
I was working off our 2nd home computer, sorry for some of the weirdness with LCOS enabled and the "flight is not enabled" message when rerolling. Flight was enabled, the Lycos thing was just an arenaflags3 setting that activated itself with a goofy number I never set. I didn't have the arenaflags settings with me to change it, so I left it.
Both CAPS were really strong, and with ship ack always brutal it was hard to get through. Both the Lexington and Zuikaku took torpedo and bomb hits, both were still afloat at the end of the frame.
TY to all who showed up and played it out on a holiday weekend.

I've sunk ships with bombs, ships are hard to hit but bombs work if you hit anything. I know dfused bombs always seem to pass through ships.
Arena has been up for testing the last 3 - 4 days. I'll leave it open another hour or two.

I'll leave the practice routines running until noon tomorrow, then clear the arena and disable flight until we are ready to go.
I need some ship tuff results. How many torps to kill a CV? I ran some tests, and I put 3 in and the CV still was OK - then I had to go (busy holiday weekend here).
I'm using Jabo's Cats N Zekes S3 settings for this one. I can tweak arena settings if something is way off...

Unlimited lives part of setup
Arena has been open all week
I have practice CV groups running 15 miles apart - abt 5 minute flight max

It depends on the time in frame. I'll reload the AI and restart if a side loses both CV's. If distances are too great, I'll restart the winner's AI also.
I left flight enabled, if some of you torpedo guys could test CV tuff I would appreciate it.
I placed a practice routine in the arena - the 2 CV groups are on parallel courses 15 miles apart. USN CV is on the 3 line, IJN CV 15 miles north. You'll need to switch color to see approx where the enemy CV is.
I'm using many of Jabo's arena settings from Cats N Zekes for this one. Plenty to do for strike and fighter groups alike...

I need to get ship tuff and ack correct and set the radar. A few testers to help would be greatly appreciated. I'll enable arena flight tonight.
This is a very simple event, as Coral Sea really was. 2 small carrier groups isolated in the South Pacific going at each other. AI routines are up and running, it's lookin good for Sunday

It is early May, 1942. The Imperial Japanese forces have just captured the island of Tulagi and established a seaplane base as a preliminary step in their planned invasion of Port Moresby. Admiral Fletcher sent the Yorktown to respond, and on May 4th attacked Tulagi sinking the destroyer Kikuzuki and several other ships, as well as destroying seaplanes.
The Japanese are now fully aware there is an American carrier operating in the area. Admiral Takagi's 2 fleet carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku have been dispatched from their invasion covering duties to find the Yorktown, which has now linked up with the recently refurbished CV2 USS Lexington.
This S3 fun event seeks to model events of May 7, 1942 south of Tulagi. The Battle Of Coral Sea.
Where: S3 Arena
When: September 5, 2010
Time: 8:30 eastern / 7:30 central
Terrain: Midway
Length: 2.5 hours
Free event, all welcome, unlimited lives
settings: From S3 Cats N Zekes
dar: 1000 ft; white dots tower; no inflight dar
USN: TBD, SBD, F4F3
Lexington, Yorktown, supporting ships
IJN: Val, Kate, A6M2 G4M1 "seaplanes" on F1 Tulagi
Shokaku, Zuikaku, supporting ships
Ship routines will be fixed to approximate historical courses, non player driven. Hints from "subs" will be given to facilitate action, as there is a lot of open water on this map. Val and SBD recce pilots strongly encouraged. It will depend which side finds the other first and gets strikes to target. Fighter CAP will also be key.
Suggested IJN Squads: TK, JG's, Knights, 352nd, 332nd and walkons who prefer IJ.
Suggested USN Squads: Remaining S3 squads and walkons who prefer USN.
A little Labor Day weekend fun for those who care to participate. <S>

We have 3 regulars in TK, new guys come and go. The hints of WB's Japan becoming active in the future sounds promising. That may or may not have any effect on S3.

Yeah, that's the game Daddy promoted me to leader for and then leaves.
I haven't done CN/TE for several rounds, but for old times sake I could see hangin out with Roan, Fish and the guys again. Love those midnight LE coordinated blitzes. Hey Learje, you still out there bud?

Thanks guys,
I set it up for a mix of main arena and S3 guys. Had I known it would be mostly S3 guys, I would have made the V1's faster by 30 - 40 mph or made the radar more challenging (where the AI's were not so visible and predictable altitude-wise).
In hindsight, I should have had a replacement group of AI routines that would have run at 400 mph instead of 350 - 360.
Allieds won, mainly by being efficient downing inbound V1's and especially finding and destroying the V1 stockpiles at F3 with heavy P38's. A bomb on a stockpile really lights up the buffer.
We had 50 - 60 pilots much of the frame, with some leaving and others entering. Glad you guys had fun.
Next summer event will be Pacific CV's vs CV's, Midway terrain, in 2 weeks or so. F4F3's vs zeke3's. CV vs CV. Even fight between hated rival fighters, with Kates, Vals, TBD's and SBD's trying to kill the other's CV. Non historical. Just a barfight in a remote patch of the ocean. We'll keep count who kills the other guy's boat. Playing offense, defense, or (better) both will win. Early wildcat vs zekes always a good one. Then the S3 arena returns to the real CM's.

Roan - too much work to send PW's. Squads interested in coordinating can email each other.
I put some basing info into the original writeup. I have the arena open with a few V1's flying.
The real event will have many more V1's, and radar settings are being continually worked on, trying to achieve what I have in mind.

Roan- could we have the allied / LW threads closed off?
Actually, LW only needs to show up and harass.
LW are 31st, Knights, JG's, TK and whoever else wants to fly a 109 / 190 defending the fatherland. Everybody else can be allied.
Hard to tell who will be there... it is summer

I tried the no inflight dar - finding the V1's was not possible. What we had last night is close to how it will be as far as inflight dar goes - trying to adjust donut dar to what I want, but might not be possible. So I'll error on the side of more easy dar-wise, as I want guys to be able to see the V1's and chase em down.
I will post all basings Friday on the final writeup.
Appreciate you guys helping and any feedback - it's getting close to what I had in mind. I think 70% allied, 30% LW mix will be about right. Roving 109G6's and 190's could have a blast dropping in on V1 hunters.
